Barry John MBE started his working life in the British military for over two decades, serving all over the world, before becoming an artist.

His Neo-expressionist work has made him an award-winning Welsh war artist and it is featured in a multitude of public and private collections. His gallery, The VC Gallery – an award-winning mental health arts charity – has been helping the struggle of veterans through an expression of art.

His visually exciting works are purposefully confrontational to get their message across, and his graffito strokes add additional complexity to the finished artwork. Using contemporary icons such as Sid Vicious, Vivienne Westwood, Amy Winehouse and Margaret Thatcher, fused with heart-breaking images of poverty and the defiant anarchy of the punk movement, his art depicts an individual’s struggle within society, the challenges that Barry knows himself only too well.

Inspired by, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Cy Twombly, fellow Welshman Andrew Vicari described Barry’s work as “so powerful and deeply rich in content, you are looking at an interwoven story delivered with colour and talent in equal measure”.
