Business

I was talking to a friend the other day about business. It’s taken me a long time to understand that very few businesses, if any, enjoy constant and uninterrupted growth. As desirable as it may be, business has both in and out ‘breaths’ of fortune and I realise now it’s completely natural.

A gallery like our sister Cornish one has seasonal as well as month-to-month differences in sales and even annually it can change from year on year. The key, then, is how not to make knee-jerk reactions to those changes in fortune and to realise that change is the only constant. Sure, plan for the future, but don’t panic when things don’t turn out as one hoped or expected.

But what occurred to me most during this conversation with my friend is that our mutual business experiences were identical to our own lives. We all go through ups and downs and changes in fortunes both financial and emotional in life… it’s completely normal.

Trying to retain a semblance of faith that all will be OK when we’re down on our luck is as important as making sure we don’t fly too high and be flippant when things are going well. No matter how stable another’s life may seem on the surface, we’re all going through ups and downs.

I wish you success in both your business and personal life, but moreover I wish you the strength to have faith when things don’t go the way you planned. Change is on its way and it will be swifter and our worries easier if we have faith in the process. Or as Winston Churchill once said: “If you’re going through hell… keep going!”
