hester-berry-biographyHester Berry grew up in the countryside of Devon and has always had an interest in its landscape and environment. She nurtured this interest at Aberystwyth University, leading her to explore life drawing at and portraiture whilst there.

She finished her studies at Wimbledon, completing an MA in Fine Art before starting to teach life drawing and painting in Brighton and London, before returning to Devon where she now lives and works as a full-time artist.

“My crafts has roots in traditional representation and traditional methods and I work hard to constantly challenge my understanding of what “painting” actually is. I try to explore new artistic techniques, representing effects such as movement, light, time and climate. Where possible, I use strokes as economically, distilling the image, the feeling and the moment into what I feel is necessary, so that objective representation leaves plenty of room for subjective interpretation.”

Hester has won and been shortlisted for many awards since 2008, including The Biscuit Factory Foundation’s People’s Choice, Young Artist of the Year and Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, and we are are delighted to be working with Hester’s newest range of Bideford Black, a traditional chalk-like raw material found on the cliffs around the north Devonshire town of Bideford.
