Joanna Commings grew up in an artistic household. Her father was a painter and Joanna herself went on to be mentored by the likes of Vaughan Warren, Chris Thomas and later by Ken Cosgrove.
As an intuitive painter, Joanna allows her mood to inspire her abstract/impressionist work. Working in acrylics, she captures the natural wonder of the seasons in her landscapes.
She uses charcoal to sketch plein air, then returns to her studio with photographic images to remind her of the colour which, when combined, translate into the finished paintings.
Sunlight through foliage, clouds, reflections, or the movement of water are all sources of subject for Joanna’s atmospheric finished pieces and the North Cornish coast as well as the canals, rivers and moorlands of Somerset are all source material for Joanna’s work.
Her work is collected throughout the UK and she was recently featured in the July 2026 edition of The Artist magazine.
