Rachel Stubbs studied Fine Art at Rawlins college before moving from her hometown of Leicester to the South West coast to learn the art of sand sculpture, exhibiting and carving at festivals from as far afield as the Netherlands and Taiwan.
When not travelling, she painted pets and wildlife and expressing herself with atmospheric abstract landscapes. This eventually became Rachel’s full time profession in 2019.
Rachel now lives in Mid Devon, gaining inspiration from her favourite scenes on Dartmoor and Exmoor, whilst occasionally travelling to Cornwall and the lakes. Focusing on the light to depict the rugged atmospheric environment of those locations, Rachel reduces the scene to its essential elements so any viewer can experience the painting with a quiet mind and feel a direct response to those subjects. She paints mainly in oils. This gives her the freedom to manipulate the paint over time, using a variety of application techniques to create her powerful and dynamic finished artworks.
